The nominees for the 89th Annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills, Calif. Former Oscar winners Brie Larson (Room) and Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), in addition to a slew of other past big winners, helped reveal the nominees. For the first time, the Academy put together a montage video of stars talking about their winning moments.
Nominees include the much-beloved La La Land, including Canada’s own Ryan Gosling and Hollywood darling Emma Stone, both of whom were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. Golden Globe-winning Best Picture Moonlight was also nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Heavily dramatic movies Manchester By the Sea and Fences also pick up nods for best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Best Supporting Actress (Naomie Harris).

This year’s nominees include many more faces of colour, a departure from last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy. The Best Supporting Actress category has three women of colour, the first time in Academy Award history it has ever happened.
Late-night talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting the Oscars ceremony, which is taking place on Feb. 26, 2017. This will be his first time helming the big awards show.
