Fatal collision shuts down 16 blocks in northeast Edmonton

A deadly two-vehicle crash shut down the northbound lanes of Manning Drive between 137 Avenue and 153 Avenue Friday afternoon.

Police were asking Edmonton drivers to avoid the area while they investigated.

Officers were called to a crash near Ebbers Boulevard and 144 Avenue just after 3:10 p.m. It appeared a small car struck a pole and a truck was also off the road.

“The collision occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m.,” EPS Const. Clayton Tipton said. “A vehicle was travelling south on Ebbers Boulevard and another vehicle was travelling west on 144 Avenue.”

“There was one occupant in each vehicle.”

On Saturday morning, police said they believe a Toyota Corolla was headed south on Ebbers Boulevard when it tried to turn east onto 144 Avenue at a stop sign and was hit by a westbound Ford F-150.

Police said the 43-year-old man driving the Corolla died and next of kin had been notified.

Friends have identified him as Oscar “Jun” Manalo.

“Jun was a wonderful man, an amazing husband to his wife and a great father to his children,” a GoFundMe memorial page reads. “He and his family moved to Canada a few years back from Pampanga, Philippines.”

Police said the 47-year-old man driving the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.

“At this point… We are still investigating so it’s all factors in the collision we’re looking at,” Tipton said, however early Saturday morning, police said they did not believe alcohol, drugs or excessive speed were factors in the crash.
