Calgary business owner victimized by gold scam

CALGARY- Police are investigating after a man says he was convinced to buy gold that turned out to be fake.

Jose Sorto says two women came into his bakery selling gold chains and rings at highly discounted rates, and were very persistent.

“’C’mon, give something, I gotta put gas in my car,’” Sorto remembers one of the women saying. “‘I’m going to Quebec I need money for gas.’”

He says he relented and spent $600 on a handful of chains and rings, but worried that the gold might not be real, he soaked it in bleach.

“About 20 minutes later it started getting black, and I was so mad at myself.”

Police are now investigating.

“There are scams out there all over the place, people pulling at heartstrings to have them open their wallets and give them money,” warns Cst. Mike Brown. “At the end of the day, innocent people trying to do good are the ones being victimized.”

He adds it’s difficult to prove the women knew the gold was fake, and finding them will be a challenge.

“These people can be very transient moving from location to location, city to city conducting the same scams.”

Sorto says he’s learned his lesson.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
