A lockdown is in place at a central Alberta correctional facility.

In a news release, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said the Bowden Institution, a medium-security unit, was put in lockdown at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to “enable staff members to conduct an exceptional search.”

CSC said the search was being executed to ensure the safety of staff and inmates. It did not indicate when the lockdown would be lifted but said “normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.”

Visits have been suspended until the lockdown is lifted.

There is no information on what prompted the search. Global News has reached out to CSC for more details.
