Starting at 7 a.m. Tuesday, some 2,200 snow-removal vehicles hit the roads in Montreal’s 19 boroughs.

City officials estimate it will take four days to clear Montreal’s 10,000-kilometre network of streets and sidewalks, with a priority given to areas surrounding hospitals, access to public transit and main arteries.

About 15 cm of snow blanketed the city overnight Sunday and into the day Monday — making it the first significant snowfall of the season.

Anie Samson,  tasked with overseeing the snow-clearing operations for the city, urged Montrealers to exercise caution near an approaching snow-clearing vehicle.

She also urged residents to respect no parking signs and to avoid parking vehicles at an angle.

“Everyone has a role to play to facilitate snow-removal operations,” she said.

Cars that are illegally parked need to be towed away before snow-clearing operations can begin, slowing down and hampering the process.

And despite the bright orange signs warning motorists not to park in certain sectors, you can count on the lone snow-covered vehicle blocking the way.

If your car is towed you can consult the city’s Système INFO-Remorquage to help locate your vehicle.

To avoid being caught off-guard though, residents can download the Info-Neige MTL app, which tracks snow-clearing operations in real time, letting you know when snow-removal crews will be in your neighbourhood.
