A fiery and deadly collision shut down a highway north of Edmonton early Wednesday morning.
Police said it happened at around 2 a.m. on Highway 28, about five kilometres north of Gibbons near Township Road 570.
RCMP said they believe a truck was headed south on Highway 28 when it tried to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with a semi-truck headed north.
The driver and lone occupant of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the semi-truck was not injured, according to police.
Video taken shortly after the crash shows a vehicle engulfed in flames and video later taken by Global News after the sun came up showed the burnt-out frame of a vehicle on the side of the road.
RCMP said they are continuing to investigate what caused the crash.
The highway was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
A vehicle fire also shut down part of the QEII near Millet on Wednesday morning.
