WINNIPEG — They share a bromance built by the beautiful game. A friendship so unique, they decided to make a documentary about it.

But how did Canadian movie star Jay Baruchel connect with Irish sportscaster Eoin O’Callaghan. Well, it all started in Winnipeg.

O’Callaghan met Baruchel while working for the Fox Soccer Report, an international sportscast that was produced at Global Winnipeg.

“Jay was a fan of the show, which I didn’t know about until we started talking,” said O’Callaghan.

They eventually kicked around the idea of a documentary to highlight Baruchel’s journey to see the Celtic Football Club, his favourite soccer team, play a home game in Scotland. The end result is Celtic Soul. The film premiered last Friday in Toronto after two years of work.

“It’s a timely thing,” said O’Callaghan. “It takes a lot of logistics and a lot of scheduling. Jay’s a busy guy. You’re doing it between two continents.”

The two travel from Canada to Glasgow to see the soccer team play. Along the way, they swing through Ireland to allow Baruchel to connect with his roots.

Celtic Soul will be released online in February.
