Edmonton Oil Kings double up Saskatoon Blades 4-2

Aaron Irving scored twice – once into an empty net – as the Edmonton Oil Kings downed the Saskatoon Blades 4-2 in Western Hockey League (WHL) action on Thursday.

Anatolii Elizarov and Trey Fix-Wolansky chipped in as well as Edmonton (7-9-2) won back-to-back games.

Logan Christensen and Mason McCarty replied for the Blades (8-10-1).

The Blades continue their three game swing through Alberta on Saturday when they take on the Medicine Hat Tigers.

In other WHL action involving Saskatchewan teams, Sam Steel scored 19 seconds into overtime as the Regina Pats edged the the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-4 – keeping the Pats’ point streak in the WHL alive.

Regina has yet to lose in regulation this season and has earned a point in all 16 of its games this season. That streak has put the Pats atop Canada’s national major junior power rankings.

Filip Ahl had a hat trick for Regina (13-0-3) and Dawson Leedahl added a power-play goal. Tyler Brown made 23 saves for the win.

Nikita Popugaev’s second goal of the night came late in the third period and forced overtime for Moose Jaw (11-4-3). Tristin Langan and Noah Gregor also scored for the Warriors as Zach Sawchenko stopped 46 shots in net.

The Pats went 4 for 7 on the power play and the Warriors were 2 for 4 with the man advantage.
