Three people required medical attention after an aggressive squirrel attacked residents and staff at a Florida nursing home Thursday.
The incident occurred at the Sterling Court Gracious Retirement Living senior care facility in Deltona, Florida.
According to emergency and animal control officials, the incident began when a squirrel attacked a woman sitting outside the facility. She evidently ran inside the facility, and the violent rodent followed her inside.
911 calls released by police to several local media outlets captured the scary situation inside the facility shortly afterwards.
“We had a squirrel that entered our building, and it’s in our activity room, and it’s jumping on people and biting them and scratching them,” one caller can be heard saying. “We need help. It’s still in there and people are bleeding.”

Meanwhile, screams can be heard in the background of the call as well as cries of “the squirrel is still here!”
Eventually, someone in the facility was able to throw the squirrel out.
“They told me they threw it out of the building,” the same caller said a short time later.
Emergency officials tell the Daytona Beach Journal that the animal was most likely rabid. Three people – two residents and one staffer – required medical attention. Their exact condition is not known at this time.
