Edmonton police are investigating after a woman was hit by a SUV north of Whyte Avenue Wednesday night.
Officers said it happened at around 10:30 p.m. north of Whyte Avenue, near 86 Avenue and 104 Street.
When police arrived, they found a 34-year-old woman with “very serious injuries” lying on the ground in a marked crosswalk.
Witnesses told police the woman was walking east across 104 Street at the crosswalk with a friend when she was struck by a 2008 Jeep Liberty in the far west lane.
Witnesses told officers the Jeep had stopped to let the pedestrians cross the street, when it was allegedly hit from behind by another vehicle, pushing it into the first pedestrian. That second vehicle, police said, was a 2016 White GMC Savana.
Ismail Attitalla lives nearby and heard a loud bang.
“I quickly looked out the window,” he said. “Right away, I saw a vehicle, a white van, right here with the front end completely destroyed and I look up and there’s a body just lying on the floor right there. At that point, we quickly called 911 and we ran down.”
Police said in a news release that the 34-year-old woman was treated and taken to hospital by paramedics “with very serious but non-life-threatening injuries.”
“I remember she said her hands were cold but she couldn’t feel from the waist down,” said Attitalla, who was first on scene.
“I just remember it was very graphic because there was blood coming from her mouth and from her nose.”
They said neither driver was injured but both vehicles were damaged.
Officers do not believe alcohol nor drugs were factors.
Charges are pending against the driver of the GMC Savana, police said.
Ainsworth, the company the truck belongs to, says it is fully cooperating with police and are also conducting its own investigation into what happened.
