Chinese drivers who blinded others motorists with their high-beam headlights were given an unorthodox punishment by police in the southern city of Shenzhen on Tuesday. The offenders were made to stare into the glare of the headlights for a full minute, state media reported.

A compulsory fine of US$44 was also handed out in addition to the punishment, which state-run Xinhua news agency said was not mandatory, and just a way of “educating” the offenders.

“Now you can experience for yourself just how harmful the high-beam headlights are and how much light pollution they cause,” a police officer was heard saying to a driver caught using his high beams.
