Downtown Kelowna hotel construction delayed once again

Construction on a planned 24-storey hotel in downtown Kelowna has been delayed once again.

Westcorp real estate was given approval to build the boutique hotel, above the city’s height restrictions of 19 storeys, in 2014.

The $65 million project will sit on the corner of Queensway Avenue and Mill Street.

In February of 2016, Westcorp announced the project, which was slated to begin construction a month later, was stalled.

The company stated that some elements of the designs still needed to be finalized.

That, along with the realization that there was a high water table in the area, pushed construction to fall of 2016.

Demolition of the building on the site, the Metro Church Community Centre, took place this past spring.

As of November 2, the company has once again announced construction will be delayed.

Once again, design revisions are cited as the reason for the delay.

Building permit fees collected by the City of Kelowna will remain in place.

“We know the public has been waiting with great expectation for the project to begin. While this delay is potentially disappointing, we will work through our revisions in as timely a way as possible and present revisions in 2017. We are committed to excellence with this hotel and site, and very excited about the possibilities of the end result,” Gail Temple, VP Operations for Westcorp said in a press release.

Construction is now expected to begin in the latter part of 2017.
