Man arrested in North Battleford, Sask. dashcam video convicted of assault

A 30-year-old man who was the subject of a dashboard camera video that caused a stir on social media has received a four-year sentence.

On April 5, a video emerged on YouTube showing a minivan rushing through an intersection. A plainclothes officer can be seen leaping out of the van and stopping a man riding on a bicycle by diving at him.

Another plainclothes officer then comes out of the van and helps to hold down the suspect. Other marked and unmarked police vehicles then arrive at the intersection.

RCMP said Randall Christopher Nicotine was the man arrested in the video. On Oct. 20 he was sentenced at North Battleford provincial court to four years custody minus a remand time of six months served, credit for nine months.

He was convicted of assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting arrest and two courts of breaching probation.

Police said Nicotine admitted several of the offences he was guilty of were for a criminal investigation, which was an aggravating factor in sentencing.

The video, called “Epic RCMP Takedown” has been viewed more than 135,000 times. When it was first posted, RCMP said they had received numerous complaints of a man being involved in criminal activity and he had existing warrants for his arrest.
