Conrad Black’s son Jonathan maintaining innocence on domestic assault charge

Jonathan Black walked out of a Toronto courtroom around 3:45 p.m. Monday on a $25,000 bail, flanked by his mother, brother and stepfather.

The 38-year-old has been in custody since last Thursday when he was arrested for assault causing bodily harm and mischief under $5,000 in relation to an alleged domestic incident involving his girlfriend.

Black’s girlfriend sat in the same courtroom where Black would later appear this morning, with a cast on her left wrist but left before her boyfriend’s bail hearing.

The evidence of the bail hearing is under a publication ban, but Black sat quietly wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and glasses. At times putting his head down, his hands on his head.

As part of his release, Black must have no contact with the alleged victim, he must live in the company of his mother, stepfather or brother James Black — either at his condominium or his mother’s home in the Yonge and St Clair area.

He also must attend counselling within five days of his release and may go to work at Radar where he is a headhunter, go out with one of his sureties or his father former newspaper baron Conrad Black.

Outside court, Black told reporters “I’m innocent, you can talk to her” referring to his girlfriend.

Black has a prior criminal record. In 2011, he was charged with criminal harassment again involving an ex-girlfriend.

In that case, he was convicted of the charge and two breaches of his bail condition. He was given a two-year suspended sentence after being given credit for 16 days pre-trial time served.

Black will be back in court on Nov. 25.
