Police arrest suspect in brutal assault of Alberta woman walking to work

Lethbridge police have arrested a suspect in connection with a shocking attack on a 25-year-old woman while she was walking to work last week.

Late Wednesday afternoon, police said “a suspect is currently in custody and the investigation is ongoing.”

The woman remains in a medically-induced coma at Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre where she is in critical but stable condition.

Police said the attack on the young newlywed was one of the worst they have ever seen.

“It certainly ranks up to the top of the list of some of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen and been a part (of in) an investigation thus far,” Staff Sgt. Scott Woods said Monday.

Police have said it remains to be seen whether the assault was random or targeted.

Online fundraising efforts are underway to help the woman’s husband, who remains at her side in hospital.
