Kelowna RCMP K9 unit helps with downtown arrests

Global News Files

Kelowna RCMP were training with their K9’s on Tuesday, when the dogs were put into action.

A member was investigating an unrelated file in the 700-block of Bernard Avenue, when she saw a man jump out of a car, leaving its engine running, and fleeing on foot.

A check of the licence plate and vehicle description revealed it had been reported stolen on Monday from the Mount Baldy Drive area.

With the K9 unit nearby, it was called to assist.

The dogs tracked a suspect to a business near the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Gordon Drive, and he was taken into custody.

“RCMP investigators conducted a search of the recovered stolen vehicle and were disturbed to find a loaded shotgun leaning against the front passenger side seat,” Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a press release. “Officers also located additional personal belongings inside the vehicle they believed belonged to an alleged second theft suspect. That suspect was also located in the immediate area by a police service dog.”
