Six months ago, an accident on a construction site in Chilliwack left one worker dead and another seriously injured. Today, the survivor was finally released from hospital.
It is the moment Gerson Alvarado’s friends and family have been waiting six months for: to see the 27-year-old man finally come home.
“I think I don’t have words to explain how that feels so great,” Alvarado said, “There’s a lot of people behind me.”

He thinks about the accident every day. On March 11, Alvarado and two others were pouring concrete at their work site in Chilliwack when a concrete boom tipped over.
Alvarado and another man were injured, but 24-year-old Sebastian Obando was killed. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by WorkSafeBC.
Alvarado’s friends and family surrounded him on Sunday, sporting shirts celebrating “Team G.”
“I just want him to see that Team G is real,” said Rosario Perez, his common-law wife.
“When you’re like this, it’s tough. When I get these little moments, it makes me feel a lot more better and makes me keep going forward,” Alvarado said.
Perez still has some questions unanswered. She doesn’t know if WorkSafe will assist them with a much-needed wheelchair accessible van.
But Alvarado’s father said the family will stay strong.
“Whatever happens to you, whatever situation in your life, you have to be strong,” said Gerson Alvarado Sr.
