Donald Trump denied saying climate change was a hoax. But he did.
Trump hit back at Hillary Clinton‘s claim that he called climate change a hoax and that it was created by the Chinese. Unfortunately, he didn’t check his own Twitter account before the debate.
Trump indeed said that in a tweet on Nov. 6, 2012.
And it’s not the first time he’s denied he ever said this.
According to Politifact, former Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders called out Trump over his stance on climate change and the “hoax” comment.
Trump said the tweet was meant to be a “joke.”
“I often joke that this is done for the benefit of China. Obviously, I joke. But this is done for the benefit of China, because China does not do anything to help climate change,” Politifact quoted Trump as saying on Fox News & Friends on Jan. 18. They burn everything you could burn; they couldn’t care less. They have very — you know, their standards are nothing. But they — in the meantime, they can undercut us on price. So it’s very hard on our business.”
But that wasn’t the only time he’s suggested climate change or global warming was a hoax.
There was another tweet on Jan. 25, 2014.
And another one on Jan. 29, 2014.
Those tweets were all before he announced his bid for the White House. But he definitely kept up his climate change denial into the his presidential campaign. In September 2015, he just flat out said he doesn’t believe in climate change at all.
“I believe in clean air. Immaculate air,” the Wall Street Journal reported him saying on Sept. 24 that year. “But I don’t believe in climate change.”
