Annual ceremony honours fallen Alberta officers

One hundred Alberta police and peace officers who have died in the line of duty since 1876 were honoured in Edmonton Sunday.

Hundreds of officers were joined by citizens at the Alberta Legislature Sunday afternoon for the 18th annual Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day ceremony.

The event was an opportunity for Albertans to pay their respects to officers who have lost their lives.

“Alberta’s police and peace officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep our families and our communities safe,” Justice Minister and Solicitor General Kathleen Ganley said.

“We will always remember and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

The ceremony also recognized families and friends of fallen officers.

The event coincided with the national Police and Peace Officer Day ceremony held at Parliament Hill.
