A Saint John nursing home and seniors facility is receiving worldwide recognition for the care it provides its residents.

Loch Lomond Villa is one of only 80 senior’s homes in the world to be awarded the Plaintree designation for excellence in resident-centered care.

It’s the largest continuing care facility in the world to achieve the distinction, something that it has been working toward for several years.

“Now we’re allowed to have our breakfast extended if you want to get up a little later, you can get up a little later and have your breakfast,” said nursing home resident Paul Leger, who was on the committee that worked towards the designation.

Officials say by listening to the residents and their stories they become a part of their care.

“We have a lady who has her own cat, we have a couple that’s welcomed their new dog to our facility and we’ve been open minded,” said Shelley Shillington, the Villa’s director of operations.

Loch Lomond Villa CEO Cindy Donovan says she believes this approach can be adopted province-wide.

The designation has caught the attention of the provincial minister responsible for seniors who was in attendance as celebrations were held to mark the occasion Friday.

“We’re certainly committed to working together to make sure that what we’re doing is innovative and it’s serving seniors where they’re at,” said Lisa Harris.

“I certainly will be pushing forth an agenda to make sure that this is exactly what we have for all our seniors here in New Brunswick.”
