Man, 26, dies after car broadsided by truck near Vegreville, Alta.

A young man died in an Edmonton hospital early Friday morning after being gravely injured in a collision on a secondary highway east of Edmonton late Thursday morning.

The two-vehicle crash happened approximately eight kilometres north of Vegreville, at the intersection of Highways 631 and 857. Police said they responded around 11:40 a.m.

Mounties said a Dodge Ram pickup was travelling east on Highway 631 and witnesses claimed the driver failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 857.

The truck collided with a Volkswagen sedan driving north on Highway 857. Police said the car was struck broadside, and as it slid off the highway it also slammed into a power pole.

+The 26-year-old man driving the Volkswagen suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton by STARS air ambulance. He died sometime after midnight.

The 34-year-old man driving the truck was treated for minor injuries and released later in the day.

Police did not believe alcohol or other intoxicants played a role in the collision. Charges are pending.

RCMP from the Vegreville Detachment, along with EMS and the Vegreville Fire Department all responded to the crash. Members of the K Division Collision Reconstruction Team were also called in to help investigate.

Traffic was diverted for about six hours while police investigated.

The crash happened about 100 kilometres east of Edmonton.
