Charlie Sheen has been noticeably absent from TV and movies for the past little while, with the exception of a few appearances here and there. His last “big” role was Charlie Goodson in TV comedy Anger Management, which ended in 2014.

Now Sheen has announced his next project, a movie entitled Mad Families, which will live on Sony’s streaming service, Crackle, and started production last week.

In Mad Families, Sheen is playing Charlie Jones — yes, another Charlie — a “lovable man child” (sound familiar?) in the story about three different families sharing the same campground on the Fourth of July. He is also executive-producing the movie.

Co-written by David Spade and Fred Wolf, the three families at the campground (one is Hispanic, one is Caucasian, the other African-American) try to figure out a way to co-habitate without infringing on each other’s personal space. In a strange twist, the families eventually choose to engage in a series of competitions to determine a winner. Sheen’s Jones character has “a heart of gold and a unique way of looking at the world.”

Former King of Queens star Leah Remini will play Sheen’s stepmother, Cheyenne. Former Glee star Naya Rivera is also a part of the cast.

“It’s great to have Charlie on board,” said Eric Berger, EVP of digital networks at Sony Pictures Television and General Manager at Crackle. “The combination of Fred’s unique comedic voice and Charlie’s sharp wit and gift for physical humour is sure to be ‘winning.’ Original movies are a key component of our ongoing programming strategy and Mad Families is a great fit for our viewers.”

Sheen will also appear in the feature film Nine Eleven (which co-stars Whoopi Goldberg), a harrowing movie about five strangers trapped in an elevator during the 9-11 terror attacks. The actor recently disclosed his HIV-positive status, and this’ll be his first big project since coming forward with his condition.
