Manitoba Bisons grab weekly conference football awards following victory

WINNIPEG — Manitoba Bisons quarterback Theo Deezar and kick returner Shai Ross have been named Canada West Athletes of the Week after helping their team avoid its first 0-3 start since 1996.

Deezar completed 21 of 27 pass attempts for 345 yards and four touchdowns in Friday’s 42-12 win over the Alberta Golden Bears at Investors Group Field. The Winnipegger also ran in a touchdown to earn the offensive honour.

Deezar has thrown the second most passing yards among all Canada West quarterbacks this season with 1,080. He also sits second in the conference with seven touchdown passes.

Ross was chosen as the top special teams player after hauling back three kickoffs for 94 yards against the Golden Bears. He currently leads the conference in both kickoff returns and kickoff return yards.

Ross also caught five passes for a game-high 104 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

The Bisons host the Saskatchewan Huskies in their annual Homecoming Game this Saturday.
