Manitoba Bisons’ DJ Lalama named player of the week

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Bisons linebacker DJ Lalama was chosen the Canada West defensive football player of the week Tuesday for his performance in their season opening loss to the Calgary Dinos.

Lalama, 23, set a new Bisons team record for most tackles in a single game. His 14 total tackles broke Teague Sherman’s record. He also had a forced fumble and a pass knockdown. Lalama recorded 6.5 tackles in the third quarter alone.

Lalama was selected by the Edmonton Eskimos in the eighth round of the 2016 CFL Draft. He was originally placed on the Eskies practice roster out of training camp but was released in July before returning to the University of Manitoba for his final year of eligibility.

This week the Bisons travel to Regina to face the 0-1 Rams on Thursday.
