If either presidential candidate wants to make America great again, they’re going to have to compromise and stop bickering – at least, according to the new Miss America.

Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields provided her political insight to a room full of reporters as she came off of her big win in the 96th annual competition.

“In your onstage interview, you say that both [presidential] candidates need to watch what they do,” a reporter said to her. “What specifically would you have the candidates do differently and what do you want America to look like at the end of your year as Miss America?”

Donning her new silver bejeweled crown and a strapless black gown, the 21-year-old University of Arkansas student said, “I think what I would want both candidates to focus on is compromise,” referencing Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. “Our country was founded on compromise and we’re living in a state now where both parties just seem to be yelling at each other. I hope that at the end of my year we’re starting to reward politicians on compromising instead of just defending themselves.”

As one of the final seven contestants, Shields was asked what her take on Clinton was.

“If you’re trying to be a leader of the free world, everything you say and do matters and all of your actions are held to a higher standard,” the Fayetteville native said within her 20-second answer window. “Unfortunately, the media does love to sensationalize everything and it’s hard to tell what is truth and what is truly scandal.”

She added, “I think both of these candidates have done a great job, but they also need to watch what they’re doing.”

The final leg of the competition was held Sunday and broadcast live from Atlantic City, New Jersey. Shields will be taking over for Betty Cantrell, the previous Miss America titleholder from Georgia.
