Kaylyn Robinson is the assistant manager for the Kelowna branch of the SPCA.

She says it costs over $1 million a year to run the animal shelter and the biggest expense is medical care for the animals.

“I think we cared for over 1,500 animals last year, and all of those animals that come in require some sort of medical treatment, whether it’s spays or neuters or some other sort of procedure, so our medical budget is always our greatest need,” said Robinson.

The society’s entire budget comes from public donations.
