One of B.C.’s biggest developers has launched a new campaign to protect B.C.’s grizzly bears.
Polygon Homes has formed the Grizzly Bear Foundation, that will work to preserve the bear population.
Chairman Michael Audain says the foundation’s first project will be a board of inquiry that will tour the province to gather public input.
A First Nations group that has been leading the effort to protect the grizzlies is already on board.
“There’s a lot of respect for bears in my community, my culture, and we did get a mandate from my community to end things like trophy hunting within our traditional territories,” said Douglass Neasloss, Kitasoo/Xai’xais Nation Chief.
“I think a lot of people just aren’t aware really what’s going on in their backyard so we’re certainly interested in educating and bringing awareness to the issue.”
