RCMP said two people were killed in a crash west of Calgary Sunday.
Police said at around 2:30 a.m. on Highway 1, a car and a truck collided in what appeared to be a head-on crash near Lac des Arcs, east of Canmore.
RCMP said driver of the truck was pronounced dead on scene. A passenger in the car was also killed and the driver of the car was rushed to hospital with critical injuries.
“The paramedics had a difficult circumstance to contend with, given the severe damage to the vehicle and the fact that there was actually another vehicle within relatively close proximity that was on fire,” Stuart Brideaux, a spokesperson with Calgary EMS, said. “The paramedic crews that were at the scene were able to initiate treatment as soon as they were able to actually get access to the patient, even though he remained trapped in the vehicle. So a lot of medical interventions were underway while the extrication was in progress.”
Mounties said just moments before the crash, officers were called to respond to a vehicle travelling the wrong way on Highway 1.
“When EMS arrived at the scene, there were several vehicles that had stopped in both east and west bound directions that had either witnessed the collision or had come across the collision or had actually been witness to the vehicle that had been travelling in the wrong direction,” Brideaux added.

Eastbound traffic on Highway 1 was diverted for several hours while police investigated.
Highway 1 was reopened to traffic at around 11 a.m.
