Members of the Kelowna Canadian Italian Club are planning a fundraising event to contribute to the Red Cross’s relief efforts in Amatrice after last week’s deadly 6.2-magnitude earthquake.

“First I was speechless… your mind just goes blank,” said club president Joe Ianfrancesco.

Ianfrancesco said once he got over the shock from hearing about the earthquake and the devastation it caused, he immediately starting making calls.

“It’s a disaster and I think everybody is touched by it… your heart really goes out to families and everyone there,” he said.

The Italian community group, which recently celebrated its 50 year anniversary in the community, will be holding two separate dinner sittings on September 9th.

One dinner will be held at 5 p.m., the second one will be at 7 p.m.

Ianfrancesco said takeout pasta with meatballs will also be sold on Friday after 5 p.m. and on Saturday, September 10th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the club’s hall at 770 Lawrence Avenue in Kelowna.

It’ll be $15 per person for dinner and per individual takeout serving.

“Individual donations for the relief effort will also be accepted on these two days.”

Tickets for the dinner and for takeout orders can be reserved by calling Ianfrancesco at 250-878-3619 or at 250-860-6325.

Another way to help, Ianfrancesco said, is by helping to supply silent auction items.

He said the club would be happy with whatever they can fundraise but they’re hoping to reach $10,000.
