Educators and families at Sunnyside Daycare in Pierrefonds-Roxboro are reeling after someone apparently stole all their outdoor toys.

The daycare is sprucing up its outdoor space and over the weekend, the area needed to be cleared out to put down grass seed.

The toys were lined up outside the daycare’s main entrance on Noël Street, not far from the curb on Saturday afternoon.

When employees arrived on Sunday morning, the toys were gone.

“I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I’m really hoping someone thought it was a pile of trash or something,” said daycare director Stephani Ilkic.

The toys include two slides, some tables, sandbox toys, balls and trucks.

“They weren’t on the main street,” noted parent Alex Nicholson.

“They were on the side street up against the fence, about nine feet from the curb. I think they were stolen. Maybe the person thought they could excuse their behaviour, but they were clearly still owned property.”

Sunnyside Daycare has appealed to social media for toy donations.

They’ve received a few so far, but replacing the old ones will be hard.

“The reason I like the old toys, especially the shovels and buckets, is they are unique to us,” said Ilkic.

“They weren’t necessarily sand toy buckets, they were odd vases and plastic containers that kids have grown used to. Muffin tins for our fake kitchen outside. Who needs muffin tins so badly that they had to take ours?”

In the meantime, the daycare has been using nearby parks for play time.
