Motorists in Calgary will soon enjoy a 70 per cent reduction in delays crossing the Langevin Bridge from westbound Memorial Drive.
It’s part of $1.5-million upgrade project now underway.
The plan includes the installation of new reversible dual left turn lanes over the bridge, which has about 400 cars making that turn at peak morning hours.
The City of Calgary says the changes will free up the bottleneck of traffic at that busy intersection.
“Our analysis shows a 70 per cent reduction in time delays with this dual westbound left turn from Memorial Drive over the Langevin Bridge,” city roads spokesperson Pat Grisak said.
“That is very significant.”
The same dual reversible left turn lanes will be installed for eastbound traffic going from Memorial Drive onto Edmonton Trail.
There will also be improvements and changes for pedestrians and cyclists at and near the intersection.
Those include pathway upgrades, a countdown timer and audible signal at the crosswalk and a dedicated signal for cyclists to cross Memorial Drive to and from the new Edmonton Trail cycle track.
The city says the project will take about eight weeks to complete and the interchange will be fully open by November.
