Corus TV and radio personalities share their secret talents

Shannon Cuciz training for Team Canada.

We spoke with a few TV and radio personalities to see what secret tricks and talents they have up their sleeves.

Shannon Cuciz played tennis for Team Canada

Before working at Global News and studying journalism I was a Team Canada athlete. I started travelling to international tournaments with a team when I was 11 years old. A sports management group brought me to the Netherlands at 15 to train at an academy with professional tennis players. Living with billet families and competing against women from all over the world for a few years is an experience I will never forget. While I don’t play tennis competitively anymore I still enjoy hitting the court with my dad, who is hard to beat!

Global Toronto’s Alan Carter cruises on his longboard

When I moved home to Toronto in 1999 after a decade in Western Canada, I wondered what I would do without mountains nearby.  The answer was an emerging trend in skateboarding, the longboard. It was like snowboarding on pavement and I loved skating to the local store for diapers when my kids were little. It made me feel like a cool dad. Now my 10 year-old daughter has her own longboard and she likes to tell me I’m the absolute opposite of cool.

I have two hidden talents that not many people know about. I can speak with a British accent (not very well, but I can do it!) and I can cross my left eye without moving my right eye. It’s not pretty, but it works great if I ever need to make my kids laugh!

Reluctant Baker: Limoncello cookies and pina colada cookies

I only started baking a few years ago. When I was in Victoria, I had some ginger molasses cookies but when I returned to Vancouver I couldn’t find anything like them. So I tried making my own.

I brought that first batch into the station and people seemed to like them. I thought I could do better, so I invested in a stand mixer, and tried again with much better results. I haven’t looked back.
