Edmonton police have come out with a warning to the public about the release of a violent sexual offender.

Clifford Berard was released from the Edmonton Remand Centre on Monday evening. The 44-year-old has previous convictions for sexual and violent offences and is known to have infectious diseases, police said in a media release Tuesday morning.

Officers consider Berard to be a violent sexual offender who poses a risk to the community.

Berard will be living in the Edmonton area and police said he will be closely monitored by the EPS Behavioral Assessment Unit.

Police urged that releasing this information was in the public’s best interest, not to encourage people to engage in vigilante action.
