Big plans: Another expansion planned for Chinook Centre

CALGARY- Fresh off a $277 million dollar expansion at Chinook Centre, Cadillac Fairview is looking at another major project at one of Canada’s most successful malls.

Last week it was announced that high-end retailer Nordstrom will be taking over the vacated Sears location. Target also has plans to move into a space vacated by Zellers.

The company’s executive vice-president said while they’re early in the process, they’re looking to get approval from the city to make the mall even bigger.

“We have an application into the city for up to a million square foot addition, which would be a mixed-use addition,” explained Wayne Barwise. “[There will be] no doubt a lot of public deliberations over the course of fall and winter to determine what will actually-hopefully-be approved.”

On Tuesday, the company also released details about its Calgary Centre project, by announcing its first major tenant in their 36 storey office high-rise near Eau Claire Market.

Energy company Inter Pipeline will occupy over 20 per cent of the 850-thousand square foot tower.

Cadillac Fairview also plans to build the second phase as soon as possible, which will see 700-thousand square feet on the same block used for residences and a five-star hotel.
