Mounties said they are seeing an increase lately in the number of people picking mushrooms and berries in remote northern locations and are reminding them of the following safety measures:

  • Do not go in areas you are unfamiliar with. You can easily get turned around in large bush areas, whether or not there are marked trails.
  • Tell someone when and where you are going AND when you can be expected to return. Tell them who to contact if they do not return at that time.
  • Wear proper clothing and take sufficient survival supplies with you.
  • Consider getting a satellite device. Cellular phones do not work in many of the remote areas.
