Tight race shaping up for Saskatoon mayor: poll

A new poll out Wednesday morning shows many voters are already beginning to look at their options for mayor in the upcoming Saskatoon civic election.

If the election was held today, 29 per cent would vote for Atchison and 26 per cent for Clark, with another 26 per cent undecided.

“While the campaign is not yet in full swing it looks like voters are already beginning to look at their options for the fall,” said David Valetin, executive vice-president of Mainstreet Research.

“Right now it looks to be a tight two-way race but that could change if Henry Dayday is able to substantially grow his support.”

Dayday is currently polling at 15 per cent with four per cent saying they would prefer someone else.

The poll also found a split on the issue of a downtown arena, with 40 per cent in favour of exploring a new development while 35 per cent would like to see renovations take place at SaskTel Centre.

As for police carding, 43 per cent oppose the practice while 38 per cent support it, with 19 per cent undecided.

The Saskatoon civic election takes place on Oct. 26, 2016.

The poll of 803 Saskatoon residents took place on July 28-29 and has a margin of error of 3.46 per cent, 19 out of 20 times.
