Ontario Provincial Police are reminding motorist to obey the Move Over law ahead of the Civic Day long weekend.
The law requires motorists to slow down when approaching an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway when its lights are activated and to move over one lane if possible.
“Last year, over 2,100 people were charged with the offence of failing to move over,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. “We really need people to spread the message, spread the word and set the example for all drivers as well.”
Failure to do so can result in fines from $400 to $2,000 and three demerit points for a first offence.

Safe boating practices are also being urged which includes wearing a life jacket at all time.
The OPP say boating deaths are preventable and that nearly half of those fatalities are attributed to the consumption of alcohol.
