Board picked for Challenge Penticton triathlon

Challenge Penticton is one step closer to becoming a reality after its first board of directors was announced on Thursday.

The new board for the Penticton Triathlon Society is made up of a wide range of community leaders, including a former triathlon racer and the chief of the Penticton Indian Band.

The board is charged with making sure Challenge Penticton has a positive impact on the community, is safe for its athletes and that the proceeds are reinvested into the Penticton area.

Board Chair Paul McMann says the race will be about the athletes’ and community experience, something he says Ironman did not do in the past.

“Long course triathlon is staying in Penticton and we’re intending it to be a better event, with a focus first on the athletes and then on community well-being. It’s not been that in the past, which we think when people see what the outcome is, they’ll be very happy,” said McMann.

According to officials, more than 1,000 people have already signed up for the 2013 triathlon.

McMann says the race will remain a single loop and that there may be minor modifications but that has yet to be determined.
