A young boy who was found brutally beaten in Beaumont last month is now out of pediatric intensive care and starting to speak again.

In an email sent to Global News Wednesday night, family friend Melanie Aube said 14-year-old Braydon Heather still has a long road of rehab ahead of him.

According Aube, he remains reliant on a feeding tube but is attempting to eat soft foods. He is also speaking in short sentences and his condition is reportedly improving with each day.

Heather was found badly beaten near a construction site on June 21. He had been cut across the face, damaging his jugular vein.

A youth has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in connection with the attack.

In her email, Aube said Heather’s mother has since begun an online petition to have changes made to Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act.
