Winnipeg triathlete to compete at 2016 Rio Paralympics

Winnipeg triathlete Chantal Givens will make history in September when her sport makes its Paralympic debut.

Givens is one of four racers named to Canada’s triathlon team for the 2016 Rio Games. The 37-year-old qualified for the Paralympics by winning a World Paratriathlon event in Spain in May. The victory was Givens first on the International Triathlon Union circuit.

“Growing up, I had the mindset of being the best that I can be and to not be afraid to work for it,” said Givens in a statement. “My dad had told me that we appreciate things more the harder we work for them and I can definitely say that I appreciate this opportunity.”

Givens won the national paratriathlon championship in three consecutive years from 2012 to 2014. She’s also placed fourth at the World Championships twice.

Givens is the third triathlete from Manitoba chosen to compete at Rio. Oak Bluff’s Tyler Mislawchuk and Winnipeg product Sarah-Anne Brault were both named to Canada’s Olympic team last month.
