CALGARY – Organizers of Calgary’s Gay Pride festival say Alison Redford will be the first Alberta premier to attend and acknowledge the event.
Spokeswoman Jessica Dollard says the premier is showing amazing leadership and also plans make a public statement following the pride parade on Sept. 2.
Redford has tweeted that she is “pleased” to be attending the parade.
Redford became the first premier to attend Edmonton’s Gay Pride festival in June.
Wildrose Opposition Leader Danielle Smith was also at the Edmonton festival but has not contacted Calgary organizers about whether she plans to be there.
Dollard says Smith hasn’t been specifically invited but is welcome, like everyone, to show up in support of human rights.
Smith’s party struggled with accusations of homophobia in the recent provincial election campaign, when an online blog surfaced of a candidate saying homosexuals would burn in a lake of fire.
