The Valkyries have only lost one meaningful game over the past six seasons. It happened nearly a full year ago when the Regina Riot ended Saskatoon’s quest for their fifth consecutive league championship during playoffs.

This weekend, Saskatoon will seek revenge when the rivals clash again in the Prairie Conference Final.

“We still think about it once in awhile, but that’s in the past. We’re a new team, we’re a better team this year, we have so much depth and I think we’re ready,” said Valkyries running back Julene Friesen.

The two Western Women’s Canadian Football League (WWCFL) teams are closely matched. The Valkyries and Riot played twice during the regular season, winning a game apiece.

“[The Riot] are a great team. They have a lot of athletes on their team as well. They’re also a big, aggressive team, I should say. They’re scary to play against but at the same time I love it,” said Friesen.

The Valkyries have a lot of weapons of their own.

In last Sunday’s playoff matchup against the Manitoba Fearless, Friesen ran for five touchdowns on five carries.

“When she said to me ‘I didn’t get hit today,’ I’m like ‘you serious’ … that’s an incredible performance and you don’t see it in football,” said Valkyries head coach Jeff Yausie.

But you likely won’t see that kind of dominance this weekend. The Valkryies expect a much tougher test against the defending league champions.

“That’s one of the great things about football, that it’s do or die on the weekend and it should be a good football game,” said Yausie.

Saskatoon will have home-field advantage on Sunday, which is significant because the Valkyries are undefeated at SMF Field this season.
