A new Fitness Journal for Girls is aiming to help Manitoba families make sports and health a priority.

Winnipeggers Andrea Katz and Allison Gervais created a year-round guide with fitness challenges and activities that families can try around the city.

“It turns out that girls are up to six more likely to drop out of sport than boys in Canada… we wanted to do something about it,” Katz said.

Free or discounted coupons for families include tennis lessons, boxing, swimming, wakeboarding, snowtubing, cross fit and gymnastics sessions.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

“We really want girls to just be trying new things and having fun,” Katz said. “It’s not about losing weight… it’s about the self confidence that sports bring.”

The journal is geared toward girls who are 5 and older.

“There are summer challenges where the girls can go out and do weekly challenges,”  Gervais said.

“Throughout the winter there are 17 different sports and fitness activities that there are discounts for.”
