Kelowna housing starts up over last year

KELOWNA — May housing starts in Kelowna are up significantly over the same time last year, according to a report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

In May 2016, Kelowna recorded 219 residential building starts, with 64 of those single family homes and 155 of them multiple family units.

That’s up from May 2015, when 74 new residential buildings were started — 49 of them single family homes and 25 multiple family units.

“Total actual housing starts were up significantly in May, relative to the same month last year,” says Taylor Pardy, CMHC Senior Market Analyst.

“[It’s] driven by a large number of new apartment condominiums getting underway. Increased sales activity in the resale market, a low inventory of unsold new and existing homes and a low vacancy rate have been supportive of multi-unit home construction so far in 2016.”

The trend towards increased housing starts is also happening in other B.C. cities, including Prince George and Vernon.
Kamloops is bucking the trend, where 39 units were started in May 2016 compared to 57 units in the same month last year.
