A new water metering system being introduced in Saskatoon is aimed at improving billing for customers.
The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system will have a communication module that will bill customers on current usage, not estimates.

AMI meters will be phased-in over a five-year period.
“We are expecting it to take approximately five years to convert all of Saskatoon’s 72,000 water meters to work with the new AMI system,” said Reid Corbett, director of Saskatoon Water.
“The key to our success is cooperation from our customers, which includes booking an appointment online as soon as they receive our first letter.”
About 10,000 water meters installed prior to 1994 will be completely replaced while 62,000 meters installed since then will have the black circular scan pad on the outside of homes replaced with a communication module.
Technicians will require access inside of homes to complete the conversion.
The city is currently taking appointments for water meter customers in Holiday Park, King George and Riversdale.
