City creates ‘Order of Montreal’ to honour remarkable citizens
MONTREAL – Mayor Denis Coderre announced the creation of the Order of Montreal on Tuesday, an honorary legacy to commemorate the city’s 375th anniversary.
Starting May 17, 2017, the anniversary of Montreal’s founding, 17 citizens will be awarded with the Order of Montreal medal, the highest honour bestowed by the city.
The honourees are people who contributed, in a remarkable way, to the development and reputation of the city.
All of the Montrealers who have been honoured by the Académie des Grands Montréalais will also be officially admitted to the Order of Montreal.
The city has started a competition for artists to design the medal.
The winner will receive a contract of $21,700 to complete the design; second and third-prize winners will receive $3,000 and $2,000.
The public will be able to submit candidacy proposals for the Order of Montreal this September and October.
