Manitoba search and rescue team returns home after deployed to Fort McMurray

WINNIPEG — A team of search and rescue experts from Manitoba arrived back home Monday morning after spending the past week in Fort McMurray.

The Manitoba Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) deployed to aid last week after devastating wildfires levelled homes and structures, displacing some 90,000 people from their houses in the area.

The team is made up of around 20 fire fighters, paramedics and search and rescue staff who faced unique challenges when arriving on scene in Alberta.

Members touched down in Winnipeg around noon on Monday, eager to head home for some rest after working up to 22 hour days, helping with coordination efforts in the emegency control centre base camp, and putting out spot fires. Some members of the crew say they’ve never seen anything like the devastation on the ground in Ft. McMurray.
