WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers used their first pick of the 2016 CFL Draft to select defensive end Trent Corney from the University of Virginia ninth overall. Corney originally hails from Brockville, Ontario and at first will probably be used to backup another non-import in Jamaal Westerman at the defensive end position.
The Bombers had back-to-back picks after trading for the Edmonton Eskimos’ second round draft pick in the deal for Chris Greaves. The Bombers used the 10th pick to choose Simon Fraser offensive lineman Michael Couture.

The Blue Bombers had a total of eight picks in the draft. They forfeited their first round selection when they took Garrett Waggoner in the 2015 Supplemental Draft. They also chose defensive back Taylor Loffler (19th overall), linebacker Shayne Gauthier (28th), offensive lineman Zachary Intzandt (37th), defensive lineman Rupert Butcher (46th), receiver Alex Vitt (55th), and linebacker Frank Renaud-Berroa (63rd).
Manitoba Bisons defensive lineman David Onyemata was the top ranked prospect but fell all the way to the fourth round after he was selected in the NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. The Saskatchewan Roughriders took a gamble on Onyemata with the 35th overall selection. He was the first of four Bisons’ players taken. The Riders also took Bisons offensive lineman Alex McKay in the sixth round with the 52nd overall pick. Just three picks later the Bombers looked across campus to draft Bisons receiver Alex Vitt. With the very final pick of the draft the Edmonton Eskimos picked up Bisons linebacker DJ Lalama.
The Roughriders used the first overall selection to take offensive lineman Josiah St. John of the Oklahoma Sooners. Laval’s Philippe Gagnon went second overall to the Montreal Alouettes and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats traded up to get the third pick from the B.C. Lions to select Brandon Revenberg of Grand Valley State.
Winnipeg’s Sean Jamieson was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes. The former Oak Park Raiders offensive lineman was taken in the 3rd round, 20th overall after playing for the Western Mustangs. Former St. Paul’s Crusaders defensive lineman Quinn Horton went in the eighth round, 68th overall to the Calgary Stampeders.
