REGINA – Police across Saskatchewan are banding together to launch a radio and online campaign to remind drivers that the ‘key’ to keeping vehicles safe is by simply locking the doors.

The Vehicle Theft Prevention Campaign came about after investigators noted two major reasons for a surge in vehicle thefts – keys left in the vehicle or vehicles left unlocked.

Regina police reached out to other provincial police agencies as well as the Saskatchewan Association of Police Chiefs (SACP) to try to secure funding to deliver a in-depth educational campaign.

“Auto theft is more than just a property offence,” said SACP President and Weyburn Police Chief, Marlo Pritchard.

“When a stolen vehicle is driven in a dangerous manner, there is a very real risk to the general public,” Pritchard said. “Everyone can play a role in reducing risk to the public simply by locking your vehicle and taking the keys with you.”

“Supporting law enforcement’s efforts to reduce vehicle thefts is a natural fit for SGI,” said Tina Beaudry-Mellor, MLA for Regina University on behalf of the Minister Responsible for SGI, Don McMorris.

“Vehicle owners also have a role to play in making their vehicles less appealing to potential thieves,” Beaudry-Mellor said. “Ultimately, if everyone does their part, we can reduce the number of vehicles stolen and the risks and consequences associated with vehicle theft.”

The radio and online advertising started at the beginning of May and will run until July 24th.
