The Calgary Airport Authority has invested in a better early warning system for lightning advisories.
Last June was one of the worst months on record for flight delays and cancellations, because of lightning.
The airport already had two lightning sensors; one in the north and one in the south.

However on Thursday, a new beacon was unveiled on the northwest corner of the airport.
Officials hope it will provide better information about lightning storms.
The information will help them protect the safety of their workers on the tarmac when the storms begin, and it could also lead to advisories being lifted earlier, so there are shorter delays for planes and passengers.
More sensors will also be added as the new runway is built.
